DSFUSA Launches "Are You Safe?" Educational Program

October 29, 2011, DSFUSA launched our "Are You Safe?" program during "Pumpkin Festival" at Lynnhaven Elementary School in San Jose, California to teach children how to appropriately interact with dogs.  Utilizing puppets, volunteers engage elementary school aged children and their parents in an interactive learning experience creating "how to" scenarios.

Children are encouraged to participate by playing with the "child" puppets, while DSFUSA volunteers demonstrate dog behavior with the dog puppet.  Next, volunteers trade places with the children for additional role play.

DSFUSA has printed literature outlining the "do's and dont's" of child/dog interactions for parents to take home.  Upon completion of the exercise, children receive an "I am Safe Around Dogs" sticker which confirms their participation in the program.

DSFUSA plans to develop this program further to engage DSFUSA members to volunteer and promote the "Am I Safe?" program across the USA.  Every little bit of education helps!

If you are a member of DSFUSA and interested in participating as an "Am I Safe?" volunteer educator, please complete the form below.
